TELEVISION NEWS REPORTS ON OBESITY ALMOST DAILY!

HERE'S NEW SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION

At the time of this writing, approximately two thirds of the population of North America can be classified as overweight or even obese in many cases. This constitutes a public health epidemic. Obesity often leads directly to hypertension, adult onset diabetes, arthritis, hearty disease, stroke, respiratory problems and even cancers particularly of the colon, breast and prostate. This is not 'news'..there are television news reports on obesity almost every day.

The causes of obestiy can be categorized into two main arenas..environmental and physiological.

The environmental causes are pretty obvious and have been done to death in other writings. These include a sedentary lifestyle and the ingestion of high calorie foods so readily available in the Western diet/fast food, prepared food, and large portion size.

In this article, I want to deal with the physiological causal factors. And the largest part of that is hormones - the neurological components of appetite regulation.

Neurological Aspects of Appetite Control

Appetite or food consumption behaviour is under the control of many hormonal factors, all of them triggered by the gastrointestinal tract which in turns affects the secretion of hormones and neuropeptides (neuro - from the nervous system, primarily the brain and peptides - means a small chain of amino acids which are the building blocks of protein)).

The satiety and appetite centers are located in the hypothalamus in the middle of the brain. Basically the satiety center inhibits the feeding center...but it can also be 'switched off' by the distension of the stomach or the secretion of the hormone cholecystokinin (CKK - comes from mucous cells in the top of the intestinal tract and from some neurons in the brain).

Below is a table with the hormones and their effect on appetite:

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) (brain)
Enchances feeding
Ghrelin (stomach) Increases the production of NPY, enhancing feeding BUT is also a critical component in acute and long-term energy stability, so needs to neither too high or too low.
Cholecystokinin (CKK)

Stimulates gall bladder to release bile and the pancreas to release digestive enzymes. Also stimulates the vagus nerve to feed back to the satiety center that you are full and slows gastric emptying to keep you feeling satisfied.
Decreases the secretion of NPY. It assists in meal size control. Works best when leptin is elevated.

Leptin (More Info) Hormone made in your fat tissues, inhibits NPY so appetite. Low calorie diets reduce leptin and increase appetite. (NOW you know why low calorie diets don't work alone) BUT when leptin is too high as in obese people with a lot of fat stores the chemistry breaks down and appetite is not supressed. So another factor like Ghrelin which can not be too high or too low.
Peptide YY A protein which is secreted lower down in the intestinal tract which inhibits the release of NPY. People who have had gastric bypass surgery have a greater PYY response to food and this may partially account for the weight loss.
Glucagon-like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) Produced in the lower part of the small intestine, slows gut motility and decreased appetite..works with CCK producing an even larger effective on food intake reduction than either alone.
Norepinephrine and Serotonin Both these neurotransmitters when elevated, reduce food intake. Hence when serotonin is low...which results in depression...that's why most people eat more when depressed.

Metabolism:

I think its well known the the main control for metabolic rate is your thyroid gland. Excercise and calorie restriction tend to increase metabolic rate..even when resting. Many people wind up taking hormone replacement medication, particularly as we get older to enhance the thyroid's action.

So what does this all mean to you? True, one can take thyroid supplements or medications for that problem, but often the sluggishness of they thyroid is 'sub-clinical' or doesn't really show on lab testing so your physician won't prescribe support.

And as far as the hormones...one cannot find injections or medications to change their levels.

BUT homeopathy, in my opinion does offer an answer. There is a certain type of remedy which can enhance or diminish the effects of things in the body..biochemical processes. I've used this type of therapy for 30 years and its been quite successful. So what I'm proposing to do is to put a remedy together to affect the above hormones/neurotransmitters and thyroid function to see whether I can have a positive effect on weight control.

If you are interesting in participating in my 'study' and would like to try the remedy yourself, please fill in the little form below and join this list. I will send you more information on the remedy and what I require you to do.

The remedy will be at NO cost...just the cost of mailing from Canada and handling by my mailing department. That cost will be $14.00 U.S. When the remedy goes on sale it will be $25.00 U.S. for 50 ml...enough for about one month.

Payment will be by PayPal only.
