New California Law may stop forcing mercury fillings onto kids

Governor Gray Davis Signs Horton Act, Ending Medicaid’s Notorious System Forcing Low-Income Children To Have Mercury Fillings

California Governor Gray Davis has signed the first-in-the-nation law to
abolish the notorious “mercury fillings or no fillings” system for
low-income children. We salute the outgoing Governor and bill’s author,
Assemblyman Jerome Horton.

In most states, low-income parents are faced with the horrid choice of
getting mercury fillings -- or no fillings at all -- for their children.

The same with pregnant women and nursing mothers: thus Medicaid policies
put the developing brain of the baby at risk of permanent harm. Assemblyman
Horton (D-L.A.), chair of the Black Caucus of the Calif. Legislature, wrote
the new law to end this system mandating mercury for the poor, working
closely with Pete Conaty, our Sacramento representative. Testimony showed
that numbers of dentists participating in Medi-Cal would increase, because
now dentists who will not put mercury into the bodies of human beings may
place alternatives. The Horton bill had strong backing from Republicans and
Democrats alike.

Changes may be coming in Ohio too. Don Washkewicz, CEO of Parker Hannifin
Corp., has asked Governor Bob Taft to give choice for Medicaid families, and
the Governor is looking into it.

The Coalition for Mercury-Free Dentistry, our lobbying arm, was the sponsor
of the Horton Law. Support was widespread:

***** Support from dentistry was across the board! The California
Dental Association endorsed the bill and worked hard for its passage -- we
thank CDA and its lobbyist Kathy Mudge. Also supporting the bill, of
course: International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, American
Academy of Biological Dentistry, and Preventive Dental Health Association.

Now it’s time to make the law work!

--- We call on our California dentists: Please start taking Medi-Cal
children. You don’t have to put in mercury fillings. And you will ensure
that children are not getting toxins implanted into their bodies.

--- We call on our dentists elsewhere: challenge the system, as Dr. Austin
Rust did in Missouri and Dr. Tom Anderson in Maine. Medicaid compensates
Drs. Rust and Anderson for placing non-toxic materials in children.

-- We call on consumers: Change the system in your state. Write the
Governor. Write the human services commissioner. In most states, it all
can be changed without a new law. Let’s end the cruelest aspect of the ADA’
s pro-mercury agenda: forcing lower-income children to get mercury in their
bodies.

Dr. Starr-Hull posted this very informative article in her newsletter:

As much as we may dislike them, the stickers or labels
attached to fruit speed up the scanning process at checkout.

Cashiers no longer need to distinguish a Fuji apple from a
Gala apple, a prickly pear from a horned melon, or a grapefruit
from an ugli fruit.

They simply key in the PLU code - the price lookup number
printed on the sticker - and the market's computerized cash
register identifies the fruit by its PLU.

The numbers also enable retailers to track how well individual
varieties are selling.

For conventionally grown fruit, the PLU code on the sticker
consists of four numbers. Organically grown fruit has a
five-numeral PLU prefaced by the number 9. Genetically
engineered fruit has a five-numeral PLU prefaced by the number 8.

So, a conventionally grown banana would be 4011, an organic
banana would be 94011, and a genetically engineered banana
would be 84011.

The numeric system was developed by the Produce Electronic
Identification Board, an affiliate of the Produce Marketing
Association, a Newark, Delaware based trade group for the
produce industry. As of October 2001, the board had assigned
more than 1,200 PLUs for individual produce items.

Fruit companies hear plenty of complaints from consumers
about hard-to-remove stickers. Retailers gripe that stickers
fall off or become marred during transport.

In response, some shippers have begun using stickers designed
with tabs that make them easier to lift off, and are buying
equipment that applies adhesive to the sticker but not to the tab.

Companies are also experimenting with different sticker materials,
such as vinyl, that hold up under a variety of temperature and
moisture conditions.

The adhesive now used to attach the stickers is food-grade,
but the stickers themselves aren't edible. To remove stubborn
ones, soak in warm water for a minute or two.

The good news about these pesty stickers is that consumers
have a chance to tell if the fruit is genetically engineered or not.
Go into your kitchen and read your stickers. Is that fruit really
organic or gentically engineered?

European countries this year seized dozens of tons of farmed salmon from
Chile found to be contaminated with malachite green, a fabric dye banned
in the United States since 1991 and suspected of causing cancer.

But the United States imports thousands of tons of salmon from Chile
without testing for malachite green, which also acts as a fungicide, or
other chemicals used at foreign fish farms.

It is unclear whether salmon tainted with such compounds is entering
U.S. markets.

Earlier this year, however, Canadian inspectors found malachite green in
smoked salmon they believe was first imported to the United States and
packaged here. And Costco, which annually sells more than 30 million
pounds of mostly Chilean farmed salmon, said last week that it will soon
begin screening for the fungicide.

"We're going to make sure there's a full-court press on this," said Jeff
Lyons, vice president for fresh foods at the wholesale giant. "We're
going to make sure our suppliers are on notice this is absolutely
prohibited."

Federal officials fear that Americans are being exposed to harmful drugs
in farmed fish and plan to expand testing later this year. One official
who spoke on the condition of anonymity acknowledged that the U.S. Food
and Drug Administration is swamped by the more than 4 billion pounds of
seafood entering the country annually from more than 160 countries.

Americans show an insatiable and growing appetite for cheap farmed seafood. The number of FDA inspectors assigned to screen the nearly 10
billion pounds of imported and domestic fish each year -- fewer than 200
-- has not kept pace.

Malachite green is toxic by ingestion, according to TOXNET. :
Animal Toxicity excerpts:
* In embryonated chicken eggs treated with malachite green developmental
abnormalities could be detected visceral hypoplasia and hematopoetic
metaplasia.
* Malachite Green is capable of interacting with DNA of living cells.
Exposed cells counter this lethal effect by excising and replacing
portions of their DNA.
DNA polymerase is crucial in repair. The dye reacts with cellular DNA
and induces changes.

Manuifacturing uses of malachite green:
Major Uses:

For directly dyeing silk, wool, jute and leather; dyeing cotton after
mordanting. Biological stain, clinical reagent (inorganic phosphate
assay). As spot test reagent for detecting sulfurous acid and cerium.
Effective for control of protozoa. Medication for veterinary medicine.
It has also found use as an agricultural fungicide. Chemically related
to gentian violet.
