DEPARTMENT STORE, ..NOW COMBINED INTO ONE STORE FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE!
People are always looking for ways to get rid of "pests"...the six or eight legged type. Trouble is..most concerned citizens don't like or want to use chemicals to do it. Here's a few ideas for you:
Storing papers in the basement often leads to unwanted inhabitants such as silverfish, spiders, etc. Take the papers, seal them in a plastic bag (Zip-locs work well) and freeze for 72 hours. Thaw in at room temperature (take the papers out of the plastic bag) and you will be able to "dust" the little varmints out.
Red spider mites?? Spray leftover coffe around their "hangouts!"
Insects in the kitchen cabinets?..Place peppermint or spearmint gum around in the cabinets where you think they are getting in...they usually turn and find someone else's cabinets to infest!
Roaches a pain in the butt?? These characters are usually very, very difficult to get rid of..but good news! They have one vice..they love cheap red wine..(and one would never want to waste the good stuff)
Pour some in a saucer or shallow bowl. The roaches drink it..become tipsy and drown in the "sauce"!
I have often been asked if there is a simple answer to the prevalent obesity we see in our society, particularly of children...something never seen before as frequent as in the past decade.
If I were to blame one food type...you'd probably be surprised that it wasn't necessarily fats..(although don't get me wrong..bad fats such as trans fats or saturated fat from animal products definitely need to be limited)..but starchy carbohydrates are MORE to blame than anything. I am referring to white flour products, refined sugars (white, brown, syrups, etc.), white potatoes (read - French Fries) chips, pasta and so on. Here is a favourite article I have passed on to patients which very simply and succinctly shows the effects of starchy foods.
NEW YORK, Mar 04 (Reuters Health) -- Eating pasta, white bread, potatoes, and other rapidly digested "starchy" or "sugary" foods may lead to overeating by triggering a hormonal state that convinces the body it is still hungry, researchers report this month in the electronic version of the journal Pediatrics.
Dr. David S. Ludwig of Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, and colleagues offered 12 obese teenage boys unlimited snacks several hours after giving them low-, medium-, or high-starch meals.
The low-starch meal consisted of a vegetable omelet and fruit, the medium was unprocessed oatmeal, and the high-starch meal was processed "instant" oatmeal.
All of the meals had the same number of calories.
The boys who had eaten the high-starch instant oatmeal ate 81% more snacks than those who had eaten the low-starch omelet and fruit, the researchers found.
The investigators also found that the blood sugar of these boys had risen sharply and then crashed, triggering hunger.
More Americans are obese now than at any time in recorded history -- approximately 20% of children and more than 33% of adults. The popularity of starchy foods may play a role, Ludwig's team notes.
Although more work needs to be done to determine the optimal healthy diet, the study authors write that "this study suggests possible advantages for treatment of obesity... with abundant quantities of vegetables, legumes, and fruits; decreased amounts of... carbohydrates; and moderate intake of protein and fats."

McDONALD'S FRENCH FRIES Think an order of french fries couldn't be as bad for your heart as the burger you ordered it with? WRONG!
A Supersize order of McDonald's French Fries has 12 grams of saturated fat - as much as a Quarter Pounder with cheese. How could potatoes damage your heart as much as greasy ground beef? You can thank the highly saturated blend of beef fat and vegetable shortening they're fried in.
STARBUCKS VENTI WHITE CHOCOLATE MOCHA WITH WHOLE MILK AND WHIPPED CREAM : Don't think of this drink as a mere cup of coffee. Think of it as a milk shake. Few people have room in their diets for the 600 calories, 25 grams of fat, and 15 grams of saturated fat (three-quarters of a day's quota of artery-clogging fat) that this hefty beverage supplies. Order your Starbucks drinks made with skim milk and without whipped cream and you can save as many as 200 calories and loads of fat.
WASHINGTON -- A health advocacy group accused the government Monday of allowing fake meat made from fungus to be sold even though it makes people sick, and demanded that the product, known as Quorn, be recalled.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest said it receivedreports from 33 people who had suffered vomiting, diarrhea and other ailments after eating Quorn. A North Carolina man broke out in hives and had trouble breathing, the group said.
Quorn is the trade name for mycoprotein, which is used as a substitute for ground beef and chicken. It's also used in lasagna and fettuccine Alfredo.
"Quorn mycoprotein has been proven to cause severe digestive reactions," Michael Jacobson, CSPI's executive director, said in a letter to the Food and Drug Administration. "Those reactions have led to fainting and dehydration, which could be life-threatening."
Because mycoprotein makes some people sick, it "cannot be considered generally recognized as safe" as designated by the FDA.
"Consumer health and wellness is the number one priority at Quorn Foods," the company said in a statement Monday. Labels on all Quorn products identify mycoprotein as the main ingredient and describe it as being "mushroom in origin," which the company says helps consumers relate it to other foods and alerts anyone that might be affected by mushroom ingredients.
But critics say that description is a stretch and that the FDA should have studied it more before it hit the shelves in American supermarkets.
"The FDA's stance with regard to Quorn has been 'get sick first, ask questions later,'" Jacobson said. "This product was cavalierly waved through by the FDA with an alarming lack of curiosity" even though the government had seen evidence that it made people sick.
CSPI, citing documents it obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, said one study showed nearly 10 percent of people who ate Quorn reported feeling nauseated or sick to their stomachs.
An FDA official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the agency was reviewing the information provided by CSPI and would evaluate all available data on Quorn before deciding how to proceed.
Quorn, introduced in Britain in 1985, arrived in U.S. supermarkets in January. Its popularity in Europe now rivals that of soy burgers and other meat substitutes.

Got a splinter....or...were you silly enough to pick up a cactus pear? Cover it with white glue..let it dry and then peel off the glue..ahh! Painless removal!
Another use for glue? Holes can become too large for a screw. Soak a cotton ball in ordinary white glue, stuff it into the hole and let it dry for 24 hours. Then try your screw!
